Last week, the board of ICICI Bank had ordered an independent probe, by an 'independent and credible' person, into allegations of 'conflict of interest' and 'quid pro quo' in Kochhar's dealing with certain borrowers. There are allegations that Chanda Kochhar had provided a loan to Videocon group on a quid pro quo basis.

Almost two years back (March 2016), he had written a letter to the prime minister alleging dirty dealings between the bank, through Chanda Kochhar, and the Videocon Group to benefit her family. Citing data accessed from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) filings by NuPower Renewables, Gupta's letter reveals that Nishant Kanodia (husband of Ravi Ruia's daughter Smiti Ruia) invested in NuPower via Firstland Holdings, Mauritius -the holding company of Matix Group (co-promoted by Kanodia).

The CBI has launched a preliminary investigation into Rs 3,250 crore loan ICICI Bank had extended to Videocon in 2012 and the possible role of Kochhar's husband -- Deepak Kochhar. Reports have alleged that Videocon chairman Venugopal Dhoot invested Rs 64 crore in Nu Power Renewables, a firm owned by Deepak Kochhar after Videocon secured a loan from a consortium of banks, including ICICI.
