The decision was taken in the Cabinet Committee on Economy Affairs (CCEA) meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing a press conference about the CCEA decisions, Railway and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said, "The CCEA has approved the construction of a third line between Allahabad and Deen Dayal Upadhyay station at an estimated cost of Rs 2,649.44 crore." He also stated that the line capacity between Allahabad and Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay is 159 per cent.

Rail connectivity in Uttar Pradesh
To improve rail connectivity in Uttar Pradesh, the Centre today approved construction of 81-km rail track between Sahjanwa and Dohrighat at a cost of around Rs 1,320 crore. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal told media, "The CCEA chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval for construction of 81.17 km rail line between Sahjanwa and Dohrighat at an estimated cost of Rs 1,319.75 crore."
He said the project, to be executed by North Eastern Railway`s arm, would be completed by 2023-24. Railway ministry, however, stated that the project area is densely populated, economically backward and deficient in road transport facilities.
According to the ministry, "The Indara-Dohrighat gauge conversion has been sanctioned and the approval for new Dohrighat-Sahjanwa line will complete the missing link and provide an alternate route avoiding Gorakhpur."
It added, "After the completion of the project, alternate route connecting Chhapra to Lucknow, avoiding congestion at Gorakhpur, will be available. This project is needed for better socio-economic development of the hinterland of this area with the help of rail transport."

Boost to Rail connectivity in Assam
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval to construct the New Bongaigaon and Agthori via Rangiya doubling (142.97 km) of Northeast Frontier Railway in Assam with an estimated cost of Rs 2042.51 crore. The project will be completed by 2022-23 and will be executed by Construction Organization of Northeast Frontier Railway, said a government statement.
The project will ease the growing through traffic into the North East region and saving due to faster mobility through the proposed double line section. This project will also generate direct employment during construction for about 34.31 lakh mandays, said the statement, adding that the alignment for the approved doubling from New Bongaigaon to Agthori via Rangiya (142.97 km) will traverse through Bongaigaon, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari and Kamrup districts of Assam.
